Selling from Vancouver

What is actually different about running a store here.

Vancouver produces brand-led stores. The founders are frequently designers, makers or people with a genuine point of view, and the storefronts show it: strong photography, considered typography, a clear identity. What sits underneath is usually much weaker, and the gap between how a Vancouver store looks and how it performs is the widest of any market we work in.

Concretely, that means excellent product images attached to product records with no identifiers, no category, no structured data and descriptions written as brand copy rather than as anything a search engine can classify. The store is invisible in Google Shopping not because it is bad but because the fields are empty. For a business that has spent real money on photography, that is a frustrating and very fixable situation.

The second Vancouver factor is audience. These brands sell to people who arrive from social on a phone, which makes mobile performance the whole business rather than a technical detail. A hero image that is four megabytes and a layout that breaks on a mid-range Android are not cosmetic issues at that traffic mix.

The third is distance from the rest of the country. Shipping east from Vancouver is slower and dearer than founders here typically assume, and free-shipping thresholds set with a Lower Mainland mindset quietly erode margin on Ontario and Atlantic orders. Vancouver Island and coastal addresses carry their own surcharges that catch out stores treating BC as one uniform zone.

Shipping from Vancouver

Delivery within the Lower Mainland is fast and cheap, and local delivery is underused by Vancouver stores that default to a single national rate. Vancouver Island and coastal addresses take longer and cost more than their postal codes suggest, and anything crossing the Rockies is a different economic proposition entirely. Seattle and Portland are close enough that US expansion is tempting, and worth doing deliberately, with duty and brokerage stated clearly at checkout, rather than by accident.

What we would do first

  • Fix product data so Google can classify and list your items
  • Check what shipping actually costs you against what you charge
  • Find what is broken, slow or silently erroring
  • Make sure something follows up an abandoned cart

Questions from Vancouver

What people here ask us.

Our store looks great but gets almost no traffic. Why?

This is the most common Vancouver pattern by a wide margin. Beautiful photography attached to product records with empty identifier, brand and category fields, and no structured data, cannot be classified properly by Google, so the free Shopping listings never appear. It is fixable, and it is usually the fastest improvement available.

Almost all our traffic is mobile from social. What matters most?

Image weight first, then how the layout holds up on a mid-range Android rather than your own phone, then how quickly the product page becomes usable. At that traffic mix these are not technical details, they are most of the revenue, and they are the first things we check.

What are your hours, being three time zones away?

We work Eastern Time, so we start early relative to you and finish mid-afternoon Pacific. In practice that means anything you send at the end of your day is usually handled before you open your laptop the next morning.

Should we be selling into the US?

Often worth considering given how close Seattle and Portland are, but do it deliberately. On the store side that means customs information on your products and duty and brokerage stated clearly before checkout. What you owe where is a question for your accountant, and we will point you there rather than guess.
