Selling from Ontario
What is actually different about running a store here.
Ontario has more small ecommerce stores than any other province, and a specific pattern that comes with being the country's manufacturing and distribution centre: a large number of them are the online arm of a business that already sells another way. A parts supplier with a counter in Brampton. A food producer whose real business is wholesale. A furniture maker who took deposits by phone for twenty years.
That shapes what those stores need. The catalogue is usually large, inherited from a supplier list or an accounting system, and full of items with technical specifications rather than lifestyle descriptions. Product data is the bottleneck, not branding. Half the work in an Ontario store is getting several hundred SKUs into a state where they are accurate, complete, and eligible for the free Google Shopping listings, which for a parts or supply business is where the ready-to-buy traffic actually is.
The second pattern is seasonality tied to the trades and to a genuine winter. Stores serving construction, landscaping, automotive or outdoor sectors have a compressed selling window, which means a broken checkout in April costs several times what it would cost in November. Regular checks matter more here than in a business with flat demand.
The third is proximity to the US border. A meaningful share of Ontario stores sell into New York, Michigan and Ohio, which brings cross-border shipping decisions a purely domestic store never faces. Getting duty, brokerage and delivery expectations stated clearly at checkout prevents most of the disputes that follow.
Shipping from Ontario
Southern Ontario is the cheapest place in Canada to ship from: dense population, short distances, and next-day or two-day ground service to most of the corridor between Windsor and Ottawa. That advantage disappears for Northern Ontario, the Territories and rural addresses, where remote-area surcharges apply and posted transit times are routinely optimistic. If you offer free shipping Canada-wide, model the remote deliveries specifically, because a handful of them can absorb the margin on a whole month of local orders.
What we would do first
- Fix product data so Google can classify and list your items
- Check what shipping actually costs you against what you charge
- Find what is broken, slow or silently erroring
- Make sure something follows up an abandoned cart

Questions from Ontario
What people here ask us.
How would you actually work with us day to day?
Inside your own Shopify admin, through collaborator access you grant and can revoke yourself. You see changes as they land and Shopify logs every action independently of anything we tell you. We work Eastern Time, so our day matches yours, and a real person replies within one business day.
Our busiest season is short. Can you work to that?
Yes, and for stores serving the trades, landscaping or anything outdoor it matters more than anywhere else. We schedule the heavy catalogue work and the deeper check-ups for your quiet months, so the store is already right before the window that actually earns opens, rather than being fixed during it.
We sell into the US as well. Can you handle that?
On the store side, yes: customs information on your products, and duty, brokerage and delivery expectations stated clearly before checkout rather than discovered afterwards. That prevents most cross-border disputes. Anything to do with what you owe where is a question for your accountant, and we will say so rather than guess.
Most of our catalogue came out of our supplier's spreadsheet. Can you fix that?
That is the most common Ontario job we do. It means bulk work: rewriting titles and descriptions so they are not identical to forty other resellers, filling in the identifiers and categories Google requires, sorting variants, and retiring discontinued lines properly rather than leaving dead pages behind.
