What is actually different about running a store here.
Alberta's small ecommerce sector is weighted heavily toward businesses that sell things people use for work. Industrial and oilfield supply, agricultural equipment and parts, workwear, trades tools. These are catalogues measured in thousands of SKUs, with part numbers that matter, and buyers who search for an exact identifier rather than browsing.
That changes the priorities completely. For a lifestyle brand, photography and story do the selling. For an Alberta parts business, the deciding factor is whether searching a manufacturer part number finds your page. Almost always it does not, because the part number is buried in a description rather than in the title, the MPN and GTIN fields are empty, and there is no structured data telling Google what the item is. Fixing that is unglamorous and it is the single highest-return job available to most Alberta stores.
The second characteristic is B2B behaviour in a B2C storefront. Customers buy repeatedly, in quantity, and want account pricing, quick reordering and quotes. Shopify can support a reasonable amount of that, but stores usually either bolt on four overlapping apps or hard-code something fragile. Simplifying that stack is common work.
The third is genuine remoteness. A store in Calgary or Edmonton is shipping to communities several hours from anywhere, and to camps and worksites with unusual addresses. Delivery expectations set for a city customer will be wrong for those orders, and shipping surcharges that look small in the rate table are not small at that distance.
Shipping from Alberta
Calgary and Edmonton both have good ground service south and east, and the two cities are cheap to move goods between. Everything else in the province is a distance problem: northern communities, worksites and farm addresses attract remote-area surcharges and take longer than the posted estimate. If a meaningful share of your orders go to those addresses, a flat national shipping rate will be steadily unprofitable, and it is worth pricing shipping by zone rather than offering one number.

Yes, and for a parts or supply catalogue it is usually the highest-return work available. It means getting the part number into the product title where search engines weight it, filling the MPN, GTIN and brand fields, adding structured data, and making sure the free Google Shopping listings are actually eligible.
We ship to worksites and camps. Does that cause problems?
Two of them. Delivery estimates set for city addresses are wrong for those orders, and remote surcharges that look small in a rate table are not small over that distance. Pricing shipping by zone rather than offering one national number usually fixes both, and stops a handful of deliveries absorbing a month of margin.
We sell mostly to other businesses. Does Shopify handle that?
Reasonably well, up to a point. Account pricing, quick reorders and quote requests are all achievable, and the usual problem is four overlapping apps doing it badly rather than a limitation of the platform.
